Two Liberian journalists, Mr. Hisenburg Q. Togba and the late John Q. Worjloh, founded Movement for the Promotion of Gender Equality in Liberia (MOPGEL) in 2000. The founders decided the formation with the realization that cultural and traditional practices denied women/girls access to education, economic empowerment and gender inequalities are major contributory factors towards poverty in Africa, especially Liberia. The founders decided to form a non-governmental organization in order to break the conspiracy of silence surrounding discrimination against women, people with disabilities, children and youth, promote gender equality and at the same time empower women, disabled and youths.
In September 2000, the organization seized activities when one of the founders, Mr. Togba fled to Ghana own to persecution as journalist while the other founder was seriously sick. Realizing the need to work with the Liberian refugees in Ghana to spread the message of gender equality, MOPGEL was registered under the Ghana company code of 1963 (Act 179) December 2003 Registration #12,666 and recognized as an official NGO 2005 through the Department of Social Welfare DSW #2,340.
