MOPGEL was formed working from the premise that cultural and traditional practices denied girls and women access to training and education in this manner curtailing their ability to improve livelihoods, literacy and to make a better quality of life for themselves and their families.
Thus, programs that emphasize human rights, training, education, health care and development of human resources are imperative, and this is where MOPGEL endeavors to provide support and services. Since independence, over 160 years ago, adequate effort is yet to be made in Liberia to address inequalities and injustice that women, children and disabled are confronted with as part of their everyday lives.
This is coupled with the lack of adequate training centers and academic schools to bridge this gap. After 14 years of civil unrest, MOPGEL believes effort must be made to setup development in these areas.
To do this, it is important to stimulate sustainable initiatives for this relatively new approach: improved schools, training, health care, advocacy, and monitoring systems are needed. Sufficient human resources must be allocated to the task and training required to raise awareness.
Consequently we are leading a project title: “Linking Human Rights & Poverty”, Empowering women, men, youth and disabled. The below projects were executed and we desire to integrate same in Liberia. We inspire you to get involve through donation, partnership, funding and volunteering.
Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) :
Started 2004, the project had provided employment and self reliance skills to refugee women, men, children, disabled and youth in software, hardware and networking. This project is the first project started in Ghana. This is because, ICTs are clearly powerful, capable of serving both men and women and are vital tools for those advocating the empowerment of women and the promotion of gender equality.
Academic school project:
As a result of the 14 years civil war, many children are in the street, some are orphans while most parents are unable to pay for their kids’ education due to unemployed. The project code name “MOPGEL Education for all campaign”
provides free and quality education to orphans, street kids
and other disadvantaged children. On June 28, 2009 we took
over a school which has been renamed, Equal Academy MOPGEL
School System. In September the school will provide K-1 to
eighth grade, ultimately providing education for up to 500
children.
Newspaper Project:
Issues concerning poor people are often down played by the media own to commercial pressure. As a result, women and other vulnerable are not heard in the media. The concept to publish the “Equality Trumpet” was born 2007. Equality Trumpet target is to propagate human rights, environmental and developmental issues. Above all it hopes to give voice to the voiceless and to propagate messages of gender equality, peace and tolerance etc. Website: www.equalitytrumpet.info.
Health care project:
Poor health is one of the factors that constitute poverty. In the midst of poverty women, children and people with disabilities are the most vulnerable. When women, men and others are healthy they can participate in politics, social issues, get employment etc. This project therefore provides free medical treatment to children 5-14 years, youth, women and men.
The Environment:
The environment program is aim at rising education and awareness on environmental sanitation through training workshops engaging students, community leaders, residents and local volunteers. Held in collaboration with Clean-up the World (CUW) and Earth Day Network (EDN) the project also clean up and fix up. Our approach to inspire women/girls, men/boys in Liberia in environmental activities would be “Training for Work”, using ICT, fashion design and catering training.
Gender equality:
This means that women and men have equal conditions for realizing their full human rights and potential to contribute to national political, economic, social and cultural development and benefit equally from the results. Equality is essential for human development and peace.
Empowerment:
This allows both men and women to take control over their lives by gaining skills, setting their own agendas and building self-confidence and self-reliance. It also means that women have increased control over their lives by acquiring a voice to challenge and overcome the inequality they experience. Women and disabled have the right to independent living. Women, the disabled and the youths are partners in development and have the right to equal opportunities. We encourage you to work with us to move this process forward.
